To AI mask or not to AI mask? Let’s talk about it in today’s editing tip!
It's in the video below:
(1 minute watch)
When Lightroom's AI masking tools first came out, I was so excited. I wanted to use them on everything.
But pretty quickly, I realized something: just because AI is smart doesn’t always mean it’s the fastest tool for the job.
Now when I edit, I ask myself two quick questions to decide which mask tool to use—and it’s saved me a ton of time.
Question 1:
Will I need to make the same change to this person (or object) in multiple images?
Question 2:
Do I need a really precise selection for the adjustment I’m about to make?
If the answer is yes to either question → I’ll go with the AI mask.
If the answer is no → the Brush tool is usually quicker and easier.
AI masks are amazing when you’re batch editing a session and need to make the same mask adjustments to multiple photos. AI masks can be synced which makes them so useful!
But for a quick, simple adjustment? The brush gets the job done faster with less waiting around for Lightroom to analyze the image.
Happy editing,
Erika
