Don’t know how to start looking for a private photo editor?
Answer these questions first. Then you’ll be able to tell prospective editors what you’re looking for.
Having these answers will make it a ton easier to see who would be a good fit for you and your photography business.
Private photo editors will have their own list of questions to ask you so these questions I’m sharing are just to get you started and save you time when you reach out to an editor you think you might want to work with.
What software do you use to edit your photos?
You’ll want to find a photo editor who edits with the same program that you do. This keeps the tech issues at a minimum.
Lightroom Classic and Capture One are the most common but you can find photo editors who use Lightroom mobile, ACR and any other editing software if you might be using.
For example, I work with photographers who edit in Lightroom Classic.
Are you looking for someone to match your editing style?
Matching your editing style means that you already have an established photo editing style and you want your editor to edit your photos to match it.
Usually a photo editor will require a small amount of photos to use as a reference (also known as “anchor images”) so they can match your style.
This is the service I provide to my clients. Matching your editing style is easier than you might think!
Or do you want someone to take over your photo editing 100% hands-off?
If you want your photo editor to do all the photo editing so that you don't have to do it at all, expect to pay more for that level of service. On the front end, you’ll want to spend time getting to know them and feeling comfortable that they will handle your editing the way you want it to be done.
Or do you want someone to help you achieve a new editing style?
If you don’t have an editing style yet or if you want to change your editing style, there are photo editors who can help you with that. This is usually an extra service beyond simply editing your photos.
What parts of your photo editing do you want to outsource?
Most of the time, color correction and culling are the biggest things to outsource to a private photo editor. You could also outsource retouching and many other services as well. Each photo editor varies on what services they provide.
How many catalogs/photos would you want to outsource in a year?
This is an important number to know because every photo editor will be asking you this so they can determine how your editing fits into their workload. And some may even require a minimum amount of catalogs/photos to be outsourced to work with them.
These questions should get you started in determining what YOU need for your photo editing requirements and help you find a private photo editor who will be a good fit.
If you need help figuring it out, feel free to check out my Photo Editing page or message me on Instagram. We can talk it through.
